Count usable days, not just calendar days
Start with the time your inbound flight lands and the time your outbound flight leaves. A late arrival is usually a transfer and dinner, not a full sightseeing day. Likewise, an early departure rarely leaves time for a museum. Write both airport codes on the plan: Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) are separate airports, as are Cappadocia’s Nevşehir (NAV) and Kayseri (ASR) gateways.
Next, mark the hotel nights. A seven-day trip has six nights, and moving hotels after every night can make a route feel shorter than it looks. For our sample journeys we prefer a full visit day in a region before an onward move. A domestic flight after 17:00 can preserve a morning or shorter local visit if the actual service, transfer and check-in time allow. It is a planning preference, not a promise that an evening flight exists on your dates.
Three or four days: stay focused
Istanbul: A three-day city stay can give the Old City a proper day, leave a Bosphorus or neighbourhood outing for another, and use the arrival or departure day lightly. Four days allows more time for both banks of the water, museums or a slower start. Compare our three-day Istanbul guide and the different two-to-four-night city breaks.
Ephesus and Pamukkale: This is a different three-to-four-day choice. Allow one focused Ephesus visit day and one Hierapolis–Pamukkale visit day, with an inland road transfer and sensible overnight bases. Do not interpret “one day at each site” as two disconnected day tours from the same hotel. Our western Türkiye guide compares Selçuk, Kuşadası and Pamukkale bases. A cruise call in Kuşadası is better treated as an Ephesus-area visit with a return-to-ship buffer.
Five or six days: two regions, if the connection works
Istanbul plus Cappadocia is a strong first-time combination. A six-day example uses arrival and Old City time in Istanbul, a Bosphorus morning before a proposed later flight, then full sightseeing in Cappadocia. The flight is short, but the whole move includes hotel checkout, travel to IST or SAW, check-in, the flight and a transfer from NAV or ASR. Do not schedule a full-day Istanbul tour and assume you can catch any flight afterwards.
Choose one central Cappadocia sightseeing day before adding a wider regional route. “Red” and “Green” are operator labels, not universal guarantees of exact stops. A balloon flight is optional, weather-dependent and best requested for an early suitable morning so a later attempt is possible, subject to availability. See our six-day day-by-day route and airport connection guide. With five days, reduce activities or choose one region rather than compressing both into two full touring days.
Seven or eight days: add western Türkiye carefully
An eight-day example can combine Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus and Pamukkale, but it has little room for a poor connection. It proposes a later Istanbul-to-Cappadocia flight after local sightseeing and a second onward flight towards İzmir after a modest Cappadocia morning. Depending on your dates, the latter may require a connection; if the arrival in İzmir is too late for a sensible Selçuk or Kuşadası transfer, change the order or add a night.
Give Ephesus its focused day, then make the road journey inland rather than repeatedly returning to a western coastal hotel. Hierapolis and the permitted Pamukkale terrace paths get their own visit. Read the eight-day plan for actual overnight logic and the questions to ask before buying separate flights. With seven days, choose whether to omit a stop, arrive into one region and depart from another, or accept a brisker schedule.
Ten days: the same highlights with more breathing room
For a ten-day, nine-night first trip, our sample rhythm is deliberately less crowded. Days 1–3: Istanbul arrival, an Old City day, then a Bosphorus and neighbourhood day; overnight Istanbul three times. Day 4: keep a light Istanbul visit and propose a flight after 17:00 to NAV or ASR if the schedule works; overnight Cappadocia. Days 5–6: central and wider Cappadocia touring on separate days, with balloon activity optional; overnight Cappadocia each night.
Day 7: a modest local morning followed by a checked onward journey towards İzmir after 17:00 if feasible; overnight Selçuk or Kuşadası. Day 8: visit Ephesus and travel inland with a planned road break; overnight near Pamukkale. Day 9: Hierapolis and the travertines at a comfortable pace; overnight near Pamukkale. Day 10: depart via the agreed airport or continue onward. If your international flight requires an early return to Istanbul, rearrange or add a night instead of relying on a fragile same-day connection.
Want Antalya as well? We would normally add days or replace one existing region. A long list of places is not a better trip when it leaves no time at them. The destination directory helps you choose what matters most.
Questions that turn an example into a workable proposal
- What are the exact international flight times and airport codes?
- Which hotel towns will we sleep in each night, and how many checkouts are involved?
- Are domestic flight options direct or connecting on our dates? Are baggage and airport transfers included?
- Do we want a private guide, a group departure or a mixture? How much walking is comfortable?
- Are the sites, meals, admissions and optional activities named in writing?
Send those details with your request and use Build Your Turkey Idea to see how your chosen destinations and number of days affect a route preview. The preview is a planning aid; our team confirms current services and availability in an individual proposal.
