First, count the hours you actually have

Three calendar days are not automatically three sightseeing days. Write down when you expect to reach your hotel and when you need to leave it for the airport. A late arrival followed by an early departure leaves one full day, not three. In that case, choose the Old City plus a nearby evening walk and save the rest for a longer visit.

Pick accommodation for the way you want to spend your evenings. Staying around Sultanahmet can simplify an early historic start; Karaköy or the wider Beyoğlu area can suit a trip built around cafés and waterfront walks. Check the actual route to transport, not just the straight-line distance on a booking map.

Day 1 · Give the Old City your attention

Start around Sultanahmet, where Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque anchor the historic peninsula. Choose your main interior visit before adding anything else: a palace, a cistern and several museums can overwhelm a short day. Make lunch a proper break and keep the afternoon lighter.

If Topkapı Palace is your priority, allow it to replace another major stop. Check the operator’s current visiting arrangements before fixing the order; working religious sites and museums have different access considerations. A licensed guide can help turn a collection of buildings into a story.

Day 2 · Follow the water

Build today around one Bosphorus experience, then choose one district to explore on foot. Decide whether you want a sightseeing cruise or simply a ferry crossing: they serve different purposes. Compare the actual route and departure point before paying.

Karaköy offers a useful change of scene. The Galataport waterfront brings together cultural venues, shops and places to eat. Leave room for a slow lunch instead of treating every hour as another appointment.

Day 3 · Make it your Istanbul

Choose Kadıköy for market streets and a food-led walk, or stay on the European side around Galata. Resist combining both with a distant excursion on departure day. Ask each person in your group to choose one thing they would regret missing, then build the remaining time around those answers.

For a family, that may mean a shorter walk and a relaxed meal. For a photography-focused trip, it may mean returning to a favourite waterfront viewpoint in different light. A good itinerary is allowed to repeat a place.
